Chapter 24

The night before, Jackie waited until she knew everyone in the house was fast asleep before she went inside. After she’d stopped sobbing, Jackie had recounted to Sarah the conversation between her and Laura at the restaurant, including the part where Laura had finally owned up to who she was sleeping with. Sarah had mostly listened and let Jackie know that she was there for her no matter what Jackie decided to do. Jackie had been so upset that she now realized that she had forgotten to ask Sarah about her being cleared as a living donor for the paired exchange.

Jackie awoke the next morning and glanced over at the other side of her and Laura’s king-size bed. It was empty. She hadn’t even heard Laura leave for work.

Just then, Wyatt opened the bedroom door and got into bed next to Jackie. “Hi, Momma.” He gave her a long hug and kiss on the cheek and then laid his head on her shoulder.

Jackie’s heart melted. “Hey, buddy. How you doing? I was going to take you to school this morning.”

“I’m tired, Momma. Can I stay home with you today?”

Jackie could tell his energy was low; otherwise, he would have been jumping on the bed by now, yelling for pancakes.

“Everything else okay?” she asked, as she put her hand on the side of his face that wasn’t next to her shoulder.

“I just went to the bathroom, and no water came out when I tried to pee,” Wyatt said.

Jackie kept her voice calm as she asked, “Is this the first time this has happened, honey? You were making some water when we were in Florida.”

“I couldn’t pee last night before bed, either, Momma. Where’s the water I’m drinking going?”

“Well, when your kidneys don’t work, the water stays in your body, but they can give you a pill that will help you pee. I think we’ll go in to see your kidney doctor today to see if he can give you something to get that water out.” Jackie rubbed his head.

“Okay. Can Grandma come, too?” he asked.

“No, she needs to stay home; it’ll just be you and me. How about we have some breakfast, then get on the road?”

“I’m not real hungry, and my head hurts a little.” Wyatt sat up.

“Okay, then why don’t you just go get dressed while I take a quick shower, and then we’ll go?” Jackie gave Wyatt a hug, and they both got out of bed.

After Wyatt left, she noted that this was the first time since Wyatt had been diagnosed with kidney failure that he hadn’t made any urine, and she knew his headache was due to his kidneys’ inability to clear out the toxins from his blood. We’re going to have to move faster on this transplant, she realized.

Wyatt came back in, and Laura’s mom poked her head into the bedroom a moment later. “Good morning, family. Coffee’s on. Wyatt, I have your cereal ready before I take you to school. Jackie, I can tell you’ve put on some weight, so I made you some fat-free muffins.
